Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo is someone that has been constantly written off during his time at St James’ Park.
The Magpies signed the right-back in 2017 for £3million (Chronicle) from Atletico Madrid and he’s mainly been used as a squad player.
He’s made just 19 senior appearances across all competitions and is usually behind teammate DeAndre Yedlin in the pecking order for the full-back spot on the right flank.
But Manquillo deserves immense credit for his revival in the last two games and it goes to show the genius of Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez.
Manquillo has seamlessly slotted into the XI during wins over Southampton and Leicester City, where he’s perhaps not got the credit he deserves.
The 24-year-old is certainly not a regular starter and does have a mistake in him, but Benitez has kept the player on side and he’s delivered when needed.
Newcastle are so well set up defensively that they can make changes in their back five and continue to deliver in the Premier League.
The North East club now know they will be playing top-flight football next year and Benitez has once again worked miracles with the squad.
Manquillo is not a world beater, but has looked tenacious in the last couple of games for Newcastle and there is no reason he shouldn’t be allowed to continue during the remainder of this season when in such solid form.
