Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has been on the fringes since he moved to St James’ Park in the summer, but things could turn around for him in the international break.
The 26-year-old has the perfect opportunity to catch the eye of manager Rafael Benitez during his time with national side Switzerland, where he is a regular starter.
The Swiss travel to Belgium on Friday for a Nations League fixture and Schar can definitely impress Benitez if he defends well against some world-class attackers.
The centre-back is likely to face the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard, which should bring the best out of him and give him the chance to show Newcastle what they are missing.
Schar completed a £3million (Daily Mail) move to the North East in the summer and is yet to get enough chances in the first team to prove himself.
He’s featured just twice so far at senior level for the Magpies, but is a defender that has an excellent range of possession and could play an important role for the team if he breaks into the XI.
Benitez’s side are without a win in their opening eight Premier League games and the manager will surely have to change things if their poor form continues, which is why Schar has a great opportunity over the next two weeks to prove a point.
