Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin has turned out to be a £5m bargain

Newcastle United signed defender DeAndre Yedlin for £5million (Chronicle) from Tottenham back in 2016 and he’s turned out to be a bargain addition.

The right-back has been a masterstroke addition at St James’ Park and made himself a key part of the defence.

He’s been a regular in Rafael Benitez’s team this campaign in the right wing-back role and perhaps doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

The USA international is part of a formidable defence that looks like keeping the Magpies in the Premier League for another season and his defensive work can’t be understated.

Yedlin, 25, is never mentioned as one of the best full-backs in the division, as he does have the odd inconsistent display in him.

But overall he puts in a great shift defensively and is part of the organised backline that has frustrated many attacks this season.

Yedlin is also useful going forward with his pace and his crosses, which helped him provide an assist for Newcastle in their draw with Bournemouth in the last game before the international break.

His £5million cost certainly represents excellent business for someone that belongs in the top flight and rarely lets Benitez down.

Newcastle’s centre-backs and goalkeeper often take the credit for the team’s defensive strength, but Yedlin is just as much a part of it and often goes under the radar.
