Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Rafa Silva from Benfica this summer.
The player’s agent has confirmed the Magpies are keen on signing his client ahead of the 2019/20 season, as reported by Chronicle Live.
Silva has enjoyed a fruitful campaign over in Portugal.
Despite making just 19 starts, the forward has scored an impressive 15 goals and made two assists.
Awkwardly for Newcastle, the player is seemingly protected by a €60 million (£51.3 million) release clause, although Chronicle Live also state he could cost in excess of £20 million.
Silva, who has 14 caps for Portugal, could be a great addition for Newcastle, who are badly in need of an upgrade on Christian Atsu.
Atsu has had a poor campaign at St. James’ Park in 2018/19.
He scored only his first goal of the season against Liverpool last week, and has disappointed with his lack of end product.
The Ghana international lost his place in the starting XI when Miguel Almiron was signed in January, but is back in now to replace the injured Paraguayan.
Atsu is about to finish his third season at Newcastle having joined as a loanee from Chelsea initially, and there simply hasn’t been enough progression following his £6.2 million permanent switch after his first season (The Daily Mail).
In 95 appearances for Newcastle, Atsu has managed just eight goals and five assists, which would suggest a huge need for someone of Silva’s ilk.
