Newcastle could really do with Ayoze Perez right about now

Newcastle United find themselves sliding back towards the relegation zone, and goalscoring is still a major concern for Steve Bruce’s side.

The Magpies are currently seven points clear of safety, but have picked up just two points from the last 12 available and have won just one game in their last nine in the Premier League.

Last weekend they fell to a 1-0 defeat against a Crystal Palace side who were horribly out of form and were without a win in 2020.

It’s all a little concerning, especially with the team struggling to score goals right now.

Many had hoped Joelinton would have found his feet by now but the big Brazilian looks like he’ll need more time to adapt.

He has been struggling, but there hasn’t been many goals from supporting cast members Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron.

It would very much seem as though Newcastle are missing once such player who always stood up to be counted for at this time of the season.

TBR’s view – Perez sale now hitting hard

The sale of Ayoze Perez looks to be really hurting for Newcastle right now.

£30 million was a lot of money to receive for his transfer (BBC Sport), whose exit meant the loss of exactly what the team need right now – a goalscorer.

By no means was the Spaniard ever prolific, but in each of Newcastle’s last two seasons, Perez stepped up to the mark with important goals in the second half of the season to help keep them up.

In the 2018/19 campaign, Perez hit 10 of his 12 goals from January, and in 2017/2018, he scored seven of his eight from the same point.

Right now, Newcastle look like they need his goals more than ever.
