Newcastle could be own worst enemy in trying to land Salomon Rondon on a permanent

Newcastle Untied could be their own worst enemy when it comes to trying to sign Salomon Rondon on a permanent basis in the summer.

The 29-year-old centre-forward moved to St James’ Park last summer on a season-long loan and has been an important player under Rafael Benitez.

He’s scored seven goals in just 21 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies and is a great focal point in attack.

According to the Chronicle, Rondon wants to remain at Newcastle at the end of his loan and Benitez is keen on keeping him.

It is understood that he would cost less than the £16million West Brom demanded last summer it looks like the Championship club will sanction his exit.

But the report details that Newcastle are only likely offer a deal that reflects his age if they do pursue him.

Newcastle’s rigid approach in the transfer market is well documented, despite making a club-record transfer for Miguel Almiron in January.

The North East club should do what they can to keep Rondon, who has the approval of Benitez and is a great fit.

He’s an excellent target man proven in the top flight and the Magpies need to add to their forward line next summer, which should include landing Rondon on a permanent.
