Newcastle United are reportedly serious about making a move for Gabriel Barbosa in wake of Callum Wilson’s injury.

The Magpies striker injured his calf during last month’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Wilson is set to be out for a number of weeks at least.

However, initial tests have proved inconclusive in terms of the precise extent of the problem.

Newcastle’s leading scorer is due to undergo another series of scans at the start of next week.

This should provide a clearer picture of his recovery timeframe.

In a worst-case scenario, it is understood there is a chance Wilson could not play again this season.

Newcastle were already looking to bolster their attacking ranks even before the 29-year-old’s injury.

Now, bringing in a new striker is a matter of utmost urgency.

According to The Northern Echo, Eddie Howe has been assessing various attacking targets in the last week or so.

And Barbosa is reported to have been under serious consideration.

According to The Mirror, Flamengo are reportedly willing to strike a deal with Newcastle over the 25-year-old.

They’d apparently let Barbosa join on a six-month loan deal.

However, this would include with an obligation to buy for £17million if the Magpies stay up, according to the report.

Meanwhile, The Chronicle has claimed that Barbosa is keen on the idea of a move to Newcastle in January.

The Brazilian has been in great form, scoring an impressive 29 goals from 43 appearances for club and country in 2021.
