Newcastle United attacker Cal Roberts has suggested he will be leaving Tyneside at the end of his contract on Instagram, as he prepares to play for the Under-23 side for the last time.

The 22-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and is yet to be offered a new deal even though he scored in the 4-2 FA Cup win over Blackburn Rovers back in January.

Roberts has been an integral member of the reserve side, clocking up 78 appearances for the second string throughout his career. He has scored 30 goals, and created another 21 in assists.

Newcastle’s Under-23 side are set to take on Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on Monday night in Premier League 2, and Roberts posted on Instagram suggesting that he is leaving, by saying “one last time”.

TBR’s view

Should Newcastle be really letting Roberts go? Born in South Shields, Roberts is Newcastle United through and through. He gets it.

Greek outlet SDNA claim Panathinaikos want to take the winger to Greece in a slightly unusual move, and that would suggest that he is indeed leaving Newcastle.

But with Ayoze Perez potentially leaving, and Jacob Murphy struggling on loan at West Brom, Newcastle need wingers and having a player like Roberts in the team would give them a player who would give his all.
