Newcastle are now trying to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic - journalist

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has claimed that Newcastle United have spoken to Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic about a potential transfer this month.

The Magpies are short of options in the middle of the park, and the need for a new midfielder increased over the weekend after Bruno Guimaraes hurt himself.

A number of midfielders have been linked with a move to St James’ Park, but can the Magpies lure in Milinkovic-Savic?

Newcastle are now trying to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic – journalist

There aren’t many players better than Milinkovic-Savic in the Serie A.

The Lazio midfielder has been absolutely incredible over the years. He has directly been involved in at least 15 goals in every season since the start of the 2019/20 campaign, which is an incredible return for a midfielder.

Milinkovic-Savic has entered the final 18 months of his contract now. He hasn’t yet signed a new deal at Lazio, and rumours have linked him with a move to a number of clubs in Europe.

Venerato has now come out and claimed that Newcastle United have spoken to the Serbian and are keen to sign him this month. However, Milinkovic-Savic doesn’t quite fancy a move to St James’ Park.

Speaking on 1 Football Club on 1 Station Radio, as relayed by TuttoJuve, the journalist said: “Newcastle had a conference call with Milinkovic-Savic.

“Juve are willing to offer the player €7 million (£6.1m), the English can get to €10 million (£8.7m), plus a higher figure for Lotito, like €60 million (£52.8m).

“Unless Newcastle take a pool shot in January, Milinkovic-Savic will stay at Lazio. The midfielder, however, is hoping for something better than the Magpies, perhaps even from more important clubs.”

The best midfielder in the world

Lazio president Claudio Lotito has been adamant that he will not sell Milinkovic-Savic for a small fee in the January transfer window.

The Serbian is Lazio’s best player. He has been incredible for them, and there is no doubt about the fact that he’s on par with the best in his position in the Serie A.

Lotito, however, went up a level and branded him as the best midfielder in the world back in November.

He said: “Guess how much he’s worth – he scored a goal at the World Cup with his ankle injured, and he’s the best midfielder in the world.”
