Newcastle are now more likely to sign 'fantastic' player than Youri Tielemans in January - journalist

Newcastle United are more likely to sign James Maddison in January than his Leicester City teammate Youri Tielemans.

That is according to the Chronicle’s Aaron Stokes, who spoke about the Foxes duo on the Everything is Black and White podcast.

Maddison was a summer target for Newcastle but they did not get the deal over the line and he has started the season impressively.

Tielemans will be sought after in the winter as his contract is set to expire in the summer, with interested domestically as well as abroad.

Newcastle more likely to sign Maddison than Tielemans

Stokes said: “A brilliant, brilliant attitude from Maddison. He had all that transfer business swirling over the summer and from the first moment, he’s been fantastic.

“We know they’ve looked at many Leicester players; Maddison and Tielemans we’ve mentioned, Harvey Barnes they were prices out of. Tielemans is a hard one because you’ve got a player who could arguably walk into 18 or 19 Premier League teams. He’s going to have options.

“He’s out of contract next summer which means clubs can go for him in January for nothing and a lot of European teams will be after him. He’ll be wanting Champions League football. That might prove just a little bit too soon for Newcastle. Maddison, we know they really liked him in the summer, they were priced out.

“His contract isn’t out until 2024 but if Leicester are really struggling you could see Newcastle going back in for him because it looks from what we’ve seen so far, Newcastle are crying out for a number ten like Maddison. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went back in for him over Tielemans.”

Maddison has really shown Newcastle what they are missing so far this season, although it was not enough to earn a call-up to the England squad.

He has been consistently overlooked by Gareth Southgate and looks unlikely to be adding to his solitary cap at the World Cup this year.

If Leicester are still battling relegation at the turn of the year, Maddison will likely consider his options, although that does not mean that the Foxes are any more likely to sell him.
