Newcastle and Manchester United have just made Champions League history in defeats last night

After a tough night for both Newcastle United and Manchester United in the Champions League, fans may be full of regret today.

For different reasons, both Eddie Howe’s and Erik ten Hag’s side finished bottom of their groups, with any European campaign coming to a close.

And given their finishes, both Newcastle and Man United made some undesired Champions League history yesterday.

As TNT Sports shared on X, it was the first time in which two Premier League clubs had finished bottom of their group in the same season.

Of course, this will lead to the usual debate, ‘Is the Premier League weaker this season?’

However, this does just seem to be the reality of two exceptional circumstances.

Newcastle did brilliantly to qualify for the competition last season, breaking all expectations for their squad.

And the unfortunate reality of adding more games and pressure to that squad, mixed in with a bit of misfortune, has led to a remarkable amount of injuries.

Coupled with one of the hardest Champions League groups you’ll ever see, Newcastle should be proud of their efforts.

Man United on the other hand, well that becomes slightly hard to defend.

Erik ten Hag’s United side simply haven’t been good enough this season, either domestically or in Europe.

Although still capable of a strong performance, there appears to be no consistency attached to their project.

In fact, Gabby Agbonlahor has now been calling for Man United to replace ten Hag with a different Premier League manager.

All is not well at Old Trafford, and the side certainly won’t be relishing a trip to Anfield on the weekend.

Champions League aside, it will perhaps surprise one or two fans to realise that Man United are actually ahead of Newcastle in the league table.

Despite already registering seven defeats, ten Hag’s side have also won a lot of games, and are yet to register a draw.

It’s definitely still possible to save the season, but there is currently very little reason to believe that will happen.
