Leeds United pulled off a potential coup on Monday when they persuaded Jean-Kevin Augustin to join the club on loan.

The Frenchman put pen-to-paper on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig, after his temporary stint at Monaco was cut short.

Leeds were on the lookout for a new striker following Arsenal’s decision to recall Eddie Nketiah earlier this month.

In Augustin, they could have pulled off a real statement of intent.

Leeds do hold a clause to sign the youngster if they are to win promotion to the Premier League.

If Marcelo Bielsa can unleash the full potential out of the player then the Whites have made an exceptional coup.

Back in 2016, it became abundantly clear just how much talent Augustin had.

He was selected by the France under-19s for the European Championships in Germany.

Augustin was named in a squad which also featured PSG star Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe is now worth £253 million (Mirror), whilst the new Leeds star is still trying to find his feet in the game.

Although it is the World Cup winner that is now touted as one of the very best players in the world, it was Augustin who stole the headlines in 2016.

He claimed the Golden Boot with six goals and he also laid claim to the Player of the Tournament accolade.

His goalscoring prowess was evident and he has since risen into the under-21 ranks.

Future

The challenge for Augustin now is to find a home in professional football.

He was poor during the first half of the campaign at Monaco but he did fire nine goals in the Bundesliga last season.

The 22-year-old has the potential but it’s now up to him to prove exactly what he is capable of.

Leeds needed a striker and his arrival will be welcomed by the club’s supporters.

It’s now down to Augustin to show that he can fulfil the potential which his form for France under-19s in 2016 so dearly promised.
