Son Heung-Min is in line for a new Tottenham Hotspur contract, according to reports. Such a deal would guarantee a competitive Spurs side.
The Daily Mail claims that Tottenham Hotspur want to offer Son Heung-Min a new contract. They hope to increase his £150k-a-week wages to tie him down for the rest of his peak years.
There’s no doubt that this is a good idea. Son is on the top of his game and if Spurs can get him to sign, they guarantee themselves a competitive side for years to come.

Flying high
Son is an outstanding player. He’s scored at least 18 goals in each of the last four seasons and become a Premier League star. On top of that, he’s currently playing the best football of his entire career.
The Korean has bagged seven goals in his opening five Premier League games. He’s added two assists to that and currently averages over three chances created per game.
Those stats are outrageously good. Along with Harry Kane, he is part of indisputably one of the world’s best forward pairings. Add Gareth Bale to that and Spurs have reason to be very excited.
But a new contract for Son would be a huge statement right now. This is Jose Mourinho’s first full season, after all, with a team that he wants and believes in. Spurs will want to build on whatever happens after this campaign and keeping Son would be a big part of that.
Again, he’s playing the best football of his career. There will be offers for Son as he is right in his prime – top clubs will want to get him now. Tying him down means Spurs get these next few years of a player who excels in the Premier League.
But it’s more than that with Son.
Risk-free
Son is a manager’s dream forward, purely because he’s so easy to use. He’s rapid and a smart runner, so you can play on the counter. But he’s also a great dribbler who can play against packed defences.
Son is also very hard-working and can press high. But he can also be disciplined and play tight. For any manager, that’s fantastic. But for Mourinho? It’s a dream come true.
Mourinho is pragmatic and wants to change how the team plays week to week. Son, given how versatile he is, is completely capable of doing that. Not every player can, and it’s largely why Son has seamlessly transitioned from Mauricio Pochettino to Mourinho.
Going forward
Son, given his versatility and quality, effectively guarantees Spurs a competitive attack over the next few years. At least until age catches up and he slows down.
Under Mourinho, too, Son will thrive and push the team on in attack. And that’s a luxury. It means Mourinho can relax with his attack, knowing it can do what he asks. Especially if Harry Kane is sticking around long-term, too.
This is a club that will not plummet down the league. They’re good enough to stay at the top end, even if certain players leave. But Son, as much as anyone, guarantees that they can fight at the top.
