Neville Southall gives backing to Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford

Legendary goalkeeper Neville Southall has told the Gary Newbon Sports Show that there is nobody better to play for England that Everton custodian Jordan Pickford.

The form of the England goalkeeper has come under scrutiny after a series of high-profile mistakes between the posts.

Pickford is the first choice stopper in Carlo Ancelotti’s team, playing 11 times in all competitions during the 2020/21 campaign.

Southall made a staggering 747 appearances for the Toffees and he believes Pickford deserves some respect.

He told the Gary Newbon Sports Show: “There’s nobody better to play for England than Jordan Pickford.

“Carlo Ancelotti is playing him every week and he’s doing well.

“He’s had a couple of dodgy times but I can’t think of a goalkeeper in the world who hasn’t. He’s come through it and he’s doing okay.

“Jordan Pickford has done nothing wrong for England and they still don’t want him in the team. It’s not Everton’s priority to buy another goalkeeper. I’ve never seen it as a big issue.”

Southall is arguably one of the top goalkeepers of his generation and Pickford needs to take confidence from his backing.

The 92-cap Wales international enjoyed some memorable times at Goodison Park and is an icon of the football club.

Pickford has had some poor performances recently but at 26 there will be hope that he can play through them and return to form.

The £100,000-a-week goalkeeper has kept just one clean sheet this season and that came on the opening day of the campaign.

If he can kick on and stop making silly mistakes, Everton could be a certainty to claim European football this season.
