Neville names Tottenham star Son as his Player of the Season

Gary Neville has told Monday Night Football (broadcast on 16/5; 22:52) that Son Heung-min is his Premier League Player of the Season, and insisted that the Tottenham star does not get anything like the credit he deserves.

Spurs certainly look set to end the campaign on a real high. They are now firmly in pole position to finish fourth in the Premier League. They only need a draw at Norwich on the final day.

And they could end the season with another Golden Boot winner in their ranks. Son is currently one strike behind Mo Salah. And the South Korean is certainly the one with a lot of the momentum right now.

The Tottenham man has scored eight times since the start of April. And with Salah an injury doubt for the final league games of the campaign, Son may perhaps have a good chance of taking the title with a brace at Carrow Road.

His form has prompted Neville to name him as his Player of the Season. And the pundit suggested that his achievement is so much more impressive given the players Son does not have around him.

“One goal off Mo Salah playing for a team that’s completely different in style and not as good,” he told Monday Night Football.

“Everyone loves him, he could play for any team in the world. If he became available any team in Europe would take him.

“But Son doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. To be one goal off Salah, 21 goals, in a team that’s nowhere near as good and doesn’t get the service from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Robertson I think he just deserves a mention.”

Son may be unlikely to win Player of the Season, but achievement is remarkable

Tottenham will be delighted with their campaign if they get themselves across the line in the race for the top-four. And Son can already reflect on what has been his best season yet in the Premier League from a goals perspective.

You would imagine that Salah or Kevin De Bruyne are more likely to win the award given that Liverpool and Manchester City have fought for the title all year.

But Son cannot be ruled out, particularly if he manages to pip Salah to the league’s top goalscorer.
