‘Never had something in my life like that’: Palace star blown away by what Liverpool did today

It’s taken Liverpool a little while to get up the gears this season, but on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were back to their rampant, swashbuckling best.

The reigning Premier League champions went to Crystal Palace top of the table by three points, having squeezed past Tottenham in midweek with a 2-1 victory.

Though Liverpool dominated that game on the pitch, they only won by a late goal, while Spurs wasted numerous chances to take the lead while at 1-1.

There have also been some poor results along the way, such as draws against Fulham and Brighton, as well as, of course, the shock 7-2 hammering at the hands of Aston Villa.

No such worries for Liverpool on Saturday, however, as they raced into a one-goal lead at Selhurst Park before adding six more in a thoroughly dominant performance.

Takumi Minamino slotted home in the third minute after great work from Sadio Mane, who in turn made it two on 35 minutes with a fine turn and finish on the edge of the box.

Roberto Firmino was the provider, and he too then subsequently got on the scoresheet himself, finishing off a great counter-attack on the stroke of half time.

After the interval, Liverpool picked up from where they left off, Jordan Henderson curling into the top corner from 20 yards out in the 52nd minute.

The Reds then made it five on 69 minutes, Firmino getting his brace with a stunning left-footed chip following a great ball from Mohamed Salah.

The Egypt international rounded off the scoring with a late brace of his own, a top-corner header and a sensational curling strike, for a final score of 7-0.

Palace captain Luka Milivojevic, whose side were unbeaten in three prior to today, has described the defeat as nothing he has ever experienced before.

“It’s tough, honestly. It’s very hard to speak after those kind of defeats,” the Eagles captain told BT Sport, as transcribed by London News Online. “I’ve never had something in my life like that.

“They were so clinical today, they had something like eight shots at goal and they scored seven goals. They’re a very dangerous team on a counter-attack and they punished every single mistake.”

What a performance by Liverpool, a simply flawless display that proudly declares to the rest of the division, “we’re fully up and running”.

Just over a month ago, there were some serious concerns over the Reds’ form, not to mention the loss of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez at the back.

However, Liverpool have overcome those obstacles and now sit six points at the top of the table for a third consecutive Christmas at the top of the table – and it’s well deserved.
