Netherlands U21 manager says he's 'disappointed' with Newcastle star Sven Botman

Netherlands U21 manager Erwin van de Looi has hit out at Newcastle United star Sven Botman‘s decision to snub his national call-up.

The 22-year-old defender was not selected to be a part of the Dutch senior setup during this international break, but he was called up to the U21 team. However, Botman turned that down, preferring to focus on his club career instead.

Netherlands U21 manager says he’s ‘disappointed’ with Newcastle star Sven Botman

Botman is arguably one of the best centre-halves of his age in the world. He really does have the quality to become a top defender in the coming years, and that’s the reason why Newcastle decided to splash £32 million (BBC) to sign him in the summer.

The Dutchman has had a decent start to life as a Newcastle player, but he hasn’t yet become the star everyone thought he would be. Eddie Howe decided to leave him on the bench against Bournemouth last weekend, with Dan Burn taking his place in the side.

That was followed by a snub from Louis van Gaal, who decided against calling him up for his side’s games against Poland and Belgium, but Dutch U21 boss Van de Looi wanted him as a part of his squad. Botman, however, wasn’t too keen, and that has not gone down well.

An unimpressed Van de Looi told Voetbal International: “I had telephone contact with Sven. We’ve talked about it.

“Of course I accept his decision, but I don’t understand him. It’s everyone’s free choice to come here, but I was disappointed with that announcement, that’s for sure.”

“I think we are preparing for a European Championship (next summer), then you would like to have everyone there. You also hope that everyone likes to come, but if they don’t, they don’t.”

TBR View:

It really is brave of Botman to do what he has done this week.

The World Cup is just a couple of months away and his decision to snub his U21 call-up has clearly not gone down well back in his home country.

We can’t imagine Van Gaal being too happy with this either, and that could well have an impact on the 22-year-old’s chances of making the Dutch squad for the World Cup in November.

Botman can’t do much now but work hard and show his class for Newcastle. If he lives up to his hype and impresses in October, his decision this week will be forgotten.
