Nemanja Vidic has told The Athletic that Manchester City defender John Stones is continually getting better. The England star is impressing at Euro 2020 alongside Harry Maguire and is likely to start once again against Denmark on Wednesday night. Vidic described his passing as “excellent”.

Stones, 27, has been in stunning form over the past 12 months. Following a spell out of the team under Pep Guardiola, Stones came back in for 2020-21. In his 35 appearances for City during 2020-21, the England star kept a whopping 21 clean sheets. Now, he has helped England into the semis.

Five clean sheets in five alongside Maguire has seen Gareth Southgate’s side progress into the semi-finals – where they meet Denmark. Vidic was full of praise for Manchester City defender Stones as he continues to shine on the biggest stage. He highlighted his passing and ability in possession.

“John Stones is good on the ball and he’s getting better. His best qualities are on the ball rather than defending. His passing is excellent. He understands his role and knows he can go forward if England play three at the back,” Manchester United legend Vidic told The Athletic.

Stones needs a new deal at Manchester City, following Vidic claims

Despite his stunning form for club and country, Stones has entered the final 12 months of his contract. A new deal is expected to be given to the defender, considering that he has been a crucial member of the team over the last year. But City need to get a deal tied up soon after the Euros.

Failing to do that, clubs will surely be monitoring developments given his form at this summer’s tournament. Could Stones consider a move elsewhere in order to further strengthen his game time and England spot? He would be best to remain at City for now, but that could easily change.
