Neil Lennon wants to keep Craig Gordon at Celtic

Neil Lennon has admitted that he would love to keep Craig Gordon for the 2020/21 season, The Scotsman reports.

Gordon is the back-up goalkeeper for Celtic but he is out of contract at the end of this season. With the final six months of his contract approaching, Gordon’s future has understandably been in the spotlight.

Celtic signed Fraser Forster in the summer – on a season-long loan from Southampton – and they also have Scott Bain. While Lennon prefers Gordon to Bain currently, he knows that the veteran Scotsman might want to spend his final playing days getting regular minutes under his belt.

Gordon, who turns 37 this month, has only played six times this year. But Lennon still rates him highly and wants to keep him at the club for next season.

When asked about Gordon’s future, Lennon said (via The Scotsman): “I had a wee chat with Craig on Saturday. He’s a player I’d be loath to let go or want to see go out the door because he’s a quality goalkeeper.

“Fraser is the number one currently and if anything happened to him then Craig is a ready-made replacement to step in. From a selfish point of view I want him to stay. He might have his own principles and want to play himself. It’s a situation not of Craig’s making. He’s a great pro and I get the fact he might want to play more games.”

TBR’s view

Gordon provides experienced cover for Forster and he is an excellent second choice option. He is in better form than Bain and he would take the gloves if Forster is injured.

It is wise for Lennon to keep his options open with Gordon. Forster is only on loan so there are no guarantees that he will return next season. This is why he needs to keep Gordon happy.
