Neil Lennon comments on Odsonne Edouard, Ange Postecoglou and whether Celtic can topple Rangers
Neil Lennon has told TalkSPORT (Tuesday, 11:50AM) that he expects Odsonne Edouard to be sold by Celtic this summer. The ex-Hoops gaffer also gave his honest verdict on incoming manager Ange Postecoglou, and also expects a close fight for the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers.
Lennon resigned as Celtic manager earlier this year, when it became more than apparent that Rangers were going to cruise to the league title. It ended Celtic’s pursuit of 10 in a row. Steven Gerrard guided Rangers to an unbeaten league campaign, and back into the Champions League.
Edouard is being linked with a move to Inter from Celtic and Lennon believes it will be tricky to keep the Frenchman. He also commented on his replacement, Postecoglou, and then responded when asked about the title race. He is confident that Celtic can push Rangers close for the 2021-22 title.
“He’s a mercurial player,” Lennon said, on Edouard. “He can be quiet, he wanted to leave and they will do very well to keep him at Celtic. He [Postecoglou] will want to get his own players. Celtic need a head of recruitment to help Ange get some players in, but it’s not as bad people are making out. There is still a core of players there.
“It is a blank canvas, hopefully he can make his mark on the team. He’s got his opportunity and he will be hoping he takes it. I think it [title race] will be close this season [with Rangers]. First of all, they have to sort out who wants to stay – or who wants to go. Four or five want to go. They’ll want to win the league and I don’t see any reason why they can’t.”
What does Postecoglou need to do at Celtic to challenge Rangers, amid Lennon comments?
Well, Celtic need a mass revamp all over the squad. Lennon claims the issue is not as bad as some claim, but plenty more than just four or five could depart. Of course, all of the on-loan players have already departed – Shane Duffy, Diego Laxalt, Jonjoe Kenny and Mo Elyounoussi.
He needs to get a move on with signings. The Australian needs to sell the players that want to go. He needs to quickly instill his style of play. There are numerous things needs to be done to even challenge Rangers, let alone topple them. Postecoglou is behind schedule, and the clock is ticking.
