USA media deliver interesting verdict on Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner’s display in their huge win yesterday

Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner helped the USA reach the last 16 of the World Cup last night. The Stars and Stripes defeated Iran 1-0 in a huge grudge match which saw Gregg Berhalter’s men join England in the knockout stages of the competition.

Turner has played in all three games at the World Cup. He has kept two clean sheets for his country and they should fancy their chances against a Holland side who haven’t exactly been at their free-flowing best during this tournament so far.

The USA were brilliant against England, with the Arsenal man keeping out teammate Bukayo Saka. Last night, it was a different performance from Turner and Co but the result was the only thing that mattered with the USA having eyes on the last 16.

Interestingly, Turner wasn’t quite at his very best last night it would seem. It’s been claimed in the USA media that the Arsenal stopper looked nervous throughout the clash; although he did get praise for commanding his box with aplomb.

NBC Sports gave him a 6.5 rating out of 10 and claimed: “Some nervy moments late but the Arsenal backup again showed command of his box even when his body didn’t follow through on good decisions.”

Given the form of Aaron Ramsdale, the Arsenal stopper will have to remain patient. It will be a bit frustrating for him but he will at least be relishing the chance to be the number-one goalkeeper for his country.

The 28-year-old signed for the Gunners from New England during the summer. He’s immediately become the backup to Ramsdale and has made four appearances in the Europa League during 2022/23.

Turner looks like a safe pair of hands. He’s at a good age for a goalkeeper and given Ramsdale’s form, it’s clear that he’s busy putting some serious pressure on the number-one stopper.

The American will be keen to cut out the nervy moments. Ultimately, however, it’s a case of so far so good from his perspective at this tournament and Holland are next in their sights.
