England suffered a 1-0 defeat to Italy in the Nations League last night and Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane was arguably the most frustrated of all the players on the pitch.

The Spurs striker has been chasing Wayne Rooney’s England record for a while now. He’s just three goals away from equalling the Manchester United legend’s goal tally, but he hasn’t been able to find the net in any of the Three Lions’ last three games.

England looked really poor against Italy last night. They were too slow, too safe and just couldn’t get going.

Kane was a frustrated figure up top. He barely had any service throughout the game, and the two times he came close to scoring, Gigi Donnarumma denied him.

The England skipper, however, came under immense criticism for ignoring a simple pass to Phil Foden, who could’ve been through on goal. That would’ve possibly helped the Three Lions avoid defeat, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Sky Sports rated Kane 5/10 and wrote: “Struggled for time on the ball and space to be effective. Drove forward well late in the half, but fired his shot well over and did not clock the run of Foden during a good break shortly after the break. Forced a double save from Gianluigi Dommarumma in the 77th minute as England searched for an equaliser.”

The Sun also rated him 5/10. They wrote: “Until forcing a double save from Donnarumma in the last 15 minutes, never looked like closing in on Wayne Rooney’s England record. Guilty of wasting half-openings, including first-half shot over bar and failure to play in Foden in the second.”

The Guardian, however, weren’t so generous. They gave him a 4/10 rating and wrote: “The captain was isolated for long spells and fed off scraps. Denied an equaliser by Gianluigi Donnarumma’s double save.”

It was a night to forget for Kane and all his teammates.

England were really, really poor at the San Siro. Apart from having a go at the end, the Three Lions didn’t do much, which is a huge worry ahead of the World Cup in Qatar in less than two months’ time.

Apart from ignoring Foden when he was free, Kane had a decent game. He wasn’t the big threat he usually is for Tottenham, but he will argue that he barely received any service.

England take on Germany next and Kane will likely start that game too. He’ll surely be hoping to get closer to Rooney’s record then.
