Brazil national media deliver interesting verdict on Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli
Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli was back on the bench for Brazil as they thrashed South Korea 4-1 to reach the quarter-final of the World Cup.
The Gunners forward has come of age during 2022/23 and has impressed Mikel Arteta enough to make him an integral part of his team.
Martinelli isn’t quite there in the eyes of Tite just yet. The Brazil head coach has him earmarked for the future and he’s not yet deemed the first choice.
Still, this tournament will be a great experience for the 21-year-old. He’s featured in every game bar one but only started the final group game against Cameroon.
Brazil were beaten 1-0 in that clash as Tite rang the changes. Clearly, it didn’t do his chances any good keeping his place and it was back to the bench last night.
Martinelli did receive some praise from the national media, however. They seemed happy with his cameo as he played the final 18 minutes.
Ge Globo claimed: “Another good participation, even with little time on the field. He assisted Bremer by closing the spaces on the left side when Korea tried to venture out and made good individual plays. Almost helped Dani Alves score a great goal.”
Arsenal star Martinelli back on the bench and he will have to get used to fleeting role
With Brazil playing teams off the park at the World Cup, Martinelli is unlikely to get a regular place in the starting eleven soon.
The Arsenal man won’t be too fussed. He knows that he’s viewed as a future star and in fairness, he’s only been a regular for the Gunners for a few months.
Brazil were formidable against South Korea. They were 4-0 up at the half-time interval and the second period was merely a game-management exercise.
Martinelli has been in good form for Arsenal during 2022/23. He’s scored five goals in 20 appearances and Arteta is delighted with his form.
His strong performance levels earned him a place in the Brazil squad but he will have to remain patient when it comes to a starting spot.
