In February 2017 one of Tottenham Hotspur’s more talented individuals left the club in a shock move. It was not a shock that the player in question, Nathan Oduwa, left Spurs. However, his location did make the news.
The England youth international, who has since switched allegiance to Nigeria, joined Slovenian Prva Liga side Olimpija Ljubljana.
The highly skillful player had become popular on YouTube for his range of tricks on the field. But loan spells at Luton Town, Rangers, Colchester United and Peterborough United had shown he struggled with an end product to match his undoubted technique.
So a shock move to Slovenia was supposed to give him a fresh start away from the UK. However, the former Tottenham youngster’s gamble did not exactly pay off.
In his one-and-a-half seasons in the Slovenian capital, he managed just 25 games. He scored twice and also provided two assists. Unfortunately, his career in Slovenia was curtailed by consistent knee problems.
“Because the leagues abroad aren’t as aggressive as the ones in England a lot more players rely on technique. I believe that playing abroad will allow me to explore my technical ability and it’s nice to play out of your comfort zone to push yourself as well.”
This summer, his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Now Oduwa is on trial with struggling Championship side QPR, who are looking to improve their squad after a poor start to the season.
Oduwa is now looking for a second chance in England, after his brave decision to head abroad came to an unfortunate conclusion.
When Oduwa left Tottenham, some fans felt the club was being too hasty with the young talent. However, he has done little to prove Spurs wrong.
Whether it be at QPR, or elsewhere, hopefully, the enigmatic winger can find success in the years to come.
