Mystery club tried to hijack £20m transfer at the last minute, it could well have been Tottenham – opinion

It would make sense if Tottenham were the unnamed top six club who tried to sign Nathan Collins this summer.

Wolves completed the signing of Collins on Tuesday – and the club beat off competition from a top six club at the eleventh hour.

He moved for £20 million, which is a transfer fee which looks affordable for Antonio Conte’s regime this summer.

The Athletic have reported that an unnamed top six club did actually express late interest in Collins before he signed for Wolves.

Tottenham swoop for Nathan Collins would have made sense

Tottenham have been in the market for a new central defender all summer long, and have settled on Clement Lenglet.

It looks like they may be about to move on from Joe Rodon and Collins is a promising player with a bright future in the Premier League.

If his development continues as expected, he will be worth a lot more than £20 million in the not too distant future, and he could have been a shrewd investment.

Lenglet looks like an exercise in getting a quick fix to the problem for this season but not resolving it longer term.

Spurs still need an elite central defender next summer, although it cannot be ruled out that Lenglet would be that man if he impresses this season.

Collins is not at that level yet, but he could get there and it might be the case that Spurs are trying to sign him from Wolves in the near future.
