'My staff and I and his teammates are very happy': Conte buzzing over what he's heard about Spurs star

The Tottenham defender was a regular in the England setup following his first cap back in 2015.

However, Dier had lost his place in the squad in 2021, but now he is back in the fold.

“With Eric Dier, he has been playing well for a period of time,” Southgate explained when discussing his squad selection (

“We think it is a really close call across our centre-backs and he has deserved to be picked back in the group.

“We know what a good character he is. He fits in with the culture and has great international experience and leadership qualities.”

“A really good achievement”

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s meeting with Leicester on Saturday, Conte said everyone at Spurs was buzzing over the news.

“I’m really pleased because when the national team call my players I am really proud because it means we are working very well,” BBC Sport quoted the Tottenham manager as saying.

“We are trying to help the players to go with the national team.

“In this case with Eric, it was a really good achievement for him. I can only tell him that it is to be a starting point.

“He has to gain the possibility to go to the World Cup.

“Before the World Cup he has to continue to play well, have a good performance, have a good stability and [show] that he is a reliable player.

“What I can tell him is only this, to continue this way, to continue to work hard and to have this concentration.

“My staff and I and his teammates are very happy for this call for the national team.”
