A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to praise Chris Maguire for his performance in today’s League One victory, which sealed a playoff spot for the Stadium of Light side.

Lee Johnson’s Black Cats made the long trip to Plymouth on the back of seven games without a win, but made a promising start and took the lead in the 21st minute.

Ross Stewart raced onto a pass from Lynden Gooch, surged forward into the opposition box and slotted home from a tight angle.

However, Argyle then equalised just after the hour mark, Joe Edwards heading home at the far post after a cross from Conor Grant.

Maguire, who has struggled for game time for most of the year, replaced Jack Diamond in the 65th minute, and he took little time in making an impact.

His first touch of the ball saw him rattle the crossbar with a free kick, and when Sunderland were awarded a penalty on 84 minutes, he rifled home an unstoppable spot kick.

Maguire’s goal boosted the Black Cats’ confidence and the visitors went on to get a third, Denver Hume netting on the rebound after more great work from Gooch.

While Gooch and Ross Stewart were the standout players on the day, plenty of Sunderland fans were eager to praise Maguire as well, calling for Johnson to start him more often too.
