A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the Gunners’ apparent failure to sign Le Havre defensive midfielder Pape Gueye.

It was claimed by French outlet Jeunes Footeux in February that the Gunners had pipped Spanish side Sevilla and Italian trio Udinese, Fiorentina and AC Milan to the 21-year-old’s signature.

Gueye’s contract with Le Havre was previously believed to run until 2021, with the Gunners reportedly set to purchase him for around £5million in a seemingly straightforward transfer.

France Football then reported that the former France Under-19 international is actually out of contract this summer and had signed a pre-contract agreement with Watford.

The report, from Tuesday, claimed that Gueye has penned a five-year deal at Vicarage Road, where he will link up with compatriots Etienne Capoue and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Watford confirmed on Wednesday morning that the player had indeed joined the Hornets on a contract until the summer of 2025, effective from 1 July.

“With Gueye’s current deal at France Ligue 2 side Le Havre expiring this summer, an official pre-contract agreement has already been lodged with all relevant authorities,” said a statement.

Here is how some Arsenal fans had been reacting on social media to the apparent failure to sign Gueye:
