Former Celtic midfielder Murdo MacLeod has confessed that David Turnbull has been the club’s only good signing this season following a year to forget for the Hoops.
Speaking to The Daily Record, the ex-Borussia Dortmund player lamented how far his former club had dropped in quality over the past few years compared to Glasgow rivals Rangers, who this season clinched their first Scottish Premiership title in ten years, whilst Celtic have failed to win a thing. Yet Turnbull has been one bright spark for the club this campaign.

The Scotland U-21 international joined the club last summer from Motherwell for a reported fee of £3.25m according to BBC Sport, with the 21-year-old midfielder scoring eight goals in all competitions for the Hoops this campaign, and for MacLeod, the youngster has been the club’s only good signing this year.
The former Celtic star said: “The ones who have still done a job for Celtic this season are the usual suspects and the better players who’ve been at the club for a while. It’s been the players who are new to the club who have found it all such a struggle.

“David Turnbull is the exception and then you have Scott Brown, Ryan Christie, Callum McGregor and Kris Ajer (who played in the 5-0 win). After that it’s a struggle to name any others who are at the level of these boys. It’s not a secret Celtic have a side who aren’t anywhere near the quality of three years ago or anywhere near the level that Rangers are currently at.”
TBR View: Celtic need more intelligent signings like Turnbull if they’re to reclaim Scottish throne
This season has been a harsh reality check for Celtic both domestically and on the continent, with the Hoops finishing bottom of their UEFA Europa League group, and the summer will be one where the club needs to make more forward signing, like Turnbull, if they’re to throw Rangers off their perch at the first time of asking.

At £3.25m, Turnbull has been a bargain for Celtic this season given the number of goals the youngster has bagged this season, and with the summer likely to bring massive changes both on and off the field, the 21-year-old will again be tasked with playing a pivotal role for the club as they embark in a brand-new era for this historic team.
