Moving Christian Eriksen on might be Mourinho’s finest Tottenham move

Most Tottenham fans would admit they were slightly concerned when Daniel Levy and Jose Mourinho authorised the sale of Christian Eriksen back in January.

Spurs followers were, rightly at the time, concerned about how the club would replace a player who had offered them so much. Goals, assists, and the sort of midfielder who can make a full XI tick, players like Eriksen don’t come along often.

But Mourinho stuck to his guns after seeing a downturn in Eriksen’s performances and a lack of desire to stay. Somewhat inevitably, Eriksen signed a deal with Inter Milan at the end of the January transfer window.

Of course, Gio Lo Celso also made his move permanent around the same time to cushion the blow.

But now, rather than Spurs fans looking back in anguish, it seems that Mourinho was – once again – correct in his judgement. Reports claim Eriksen is now pushing for a move away from Inter already.

It goes without saying, then, that Mourinho will have a quiet smug look on his face in private moments if Eriksen does cross his mind.

Nightmare

To say Eriksen’s stay in Italy so far has been a nightmare would be a bit of an understatement. He’s scored just four times in 33 appearances in Serie A, while he’s yet to register this season.

Worryingly for the Danish star, he’s also yet to complete 90 minutes this term. The closest he has come to that ‘milestone’ was a 79 minute appearance against Gladbach in the Champions League. (stats by Transfermarkt)

There was a time when Spurs fans would have probably taken Eriksen back in a heartbeat. But even though it was only 10 months ago, it seems like Mourinho has taken Tottenham to another level without the Dane on board.

A trophy is a very realistic possibility this season with a host of new signings. But while those signings look very good at the moment, the decision to shift Eriksen on might be Mourinho’s most inspired move yet.
