Moussa Sissoko has suggested that every Tottenham Hotspur player was happy with Joe Rodon’s display at the weekend, and backed the summer signing to get better and better, in comments reported by Football London.

Rodon was handed a daunting task for his full Spurs debut. The centre-back had previously come on twice before. But Sunday’s trip to Chelsea saw him named in the starting lineup for the first time.

It proved to be an incredibly encouraging performance from the centre-back. He made a couple of errors. However, Spurs kept a clean sheet and secured a point. And the Wales international did not look out of place at the highest level.

Sissoko claimed that the team were impressed by what they saw from the 23-year-old.

“I think we are all happy with him defensively. He was strong and he won a lot of balls, fighting,” he said, as reported by Football London.

“He came on against City and did well. His first start was good. Hopefully he will get better and better.”

It was a huge ask expecting Rodon to fill the void left by Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian has been outstanding alongside Eric Dier this season.

But Rodon – who cost an initial £11 million (via BBC Sport) – looks composed on the ball. And he was certainly not overawed by the prospect of coming in in such an important game.

He now has a fantastic opportunity to stake a claim for more game-time while Alderweireld is out. There may be times when Rodon’s lack of experience is exposed.

But he clearly has all of the tools to develop into a top player in the Premier League.
