It is now nearly a year since Tottenham Hotspur cashed in on Belgian midfielder Mousa Dembele. With his contract expiring and amid continued fitness struggles, Spurs decided it was best to get a fee for the player and shifted him to Chinese football. As reported by The Guardian, Tottenham received £11 million from Guangzhou R&F for his services and lost a cult hero in the process.
Often described by players at the club as Tottenham’s best player, fans had a similar sentimentality toward their bullish midfield destroyer.
It would be fair to say that Tottenham have been lacking in the middle of the park since Dembele’s departure from the first-team. A recent statistic that emerged on social media backs up that claim.
Tottenham might have a future Dembele type in their midst with Tanguy Ndombele clearly a potential replacement for years to come but right now they still lack a player of Dembele’s qualities in the heart of the park.

He is certainly a player that Jose Mourinho would have loved and would have been an instant favourite in the Tottenham midfield.
Instead, the 32-year-old is playing regularly, but for a struggling Chinese outfit who finished 12th in the Super League last season.
