Jose Mourinho watched his Tottenham Hotspur side come from behind to beat Chelsea on penalties in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night after Erik Lamela scored late on – but Mourinho took to Instagram to praise another of his Tottenham stars.

Mourinho made nine changes to his Tottenham side after stating that he may have to sacrifice his club’s run in the Carabao Cup to keep Spurs competitive in the Premier League and Europa League – with Spurs facing a horrific fixture schedule.

In the first half, the much-changed side struggled. New Chelsea signing Timo Werner’s powerful effort put Frank Lampard’s side ahead, but Spurs were a different animal in the second half – as Lamela, Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon starred.

After a quick trip to the toilet, Dier watched on as new signing Reguilon delivered a perfect cross to find Lamela – who finished from close range. It was Dier that earned the man-of-the-match award, and Mourinho praised Dier on Instagram.

TBR’s view – Dier becoming one of Tottenham’s most crucial players

Mourinho’s decision to bring Dier back into the middle of the defence, after the England international had fallen down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino as a midfielder, has seemed to pay Dier dividends.

Of Tottenham’s central defenders, Dier looks to be first choice with Toby Alderweireld in and out of the side and Davinson Sanchez preferred to the Belgian. He is crucial to Spurs, and his two 90-minute displays in 48 hours is proof.

Signed for just £4million (Telegraph), Dier is continuing to prove he is one of Tottenham’s best signings in recent history.
