Mourinho praises £50m-rated Euro 2020 star that Tottenham could reportedly go after this summer
Last summer, Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips was only just embarking on his first Premier League season. But he was already catching the attention of England and Premier League clubs – including Tottenham. Now, Jose Mourinho has praised him, after his outing against Croatia.
Phillips, 25, earned the man-of-the-match award as England beat Croatia to start their Euro 2020 campaign with a win. Despite playing in holding midfield for his club, Phillips was given a box-to-box role by Gareth Southgate and he played it to a tee. He got the assist, too.
Picking up on a through ball from Kyle Walker, Phillips turned inside and laid an inch-perfect pass to Sterling who finished without needing to take a touch. His performance was of no surprise to Leeds fans, and perhaps neither to Tottenham or Liverpool – according to earlier reports.
Last October, The Mirror claimed that Tottenham and Liverpool were planning a move to sign £50million-rated Phillips in the upcoming window. Now, Phillips has even caught the eye of recently-sacked Tottenham boss Mourinho – who gave a glowing verdict in his analysis on TalkSPORT.
“He is a player without international experience,” Mourinho said. “No Champions League, no 20/25 caps, only arrived from the Championship last season and has just played in the most-intense league in the world, all season. He showed amazing personality. Rice was stable.
“Phillips was more than stable. He pressed higher, the goal, everytime Modric or Kovacic tried to get away – he was not afraid of pressing higher. Don’t remember him missing a pass. I thought he was very, very good. seeing a young guy like him play like that at this stage, is fantastic.”
Could Tottenham convince Phillips to leave Leeds – amid Mourinho comments?
Tottenham only managed to finish a couple of places higher in the Premier League this season. Looking at the two sides, you would have to say that Leeds are on the up – while Spurs are getting worse. It is why Harry Kane wants to leave this summer, among numerous Tottenham players.
Phillips is Leeds born and bred. He is loved and adored by Leeds fans. A fan favourite. If he is to leave Leeds, it will surely be to a club in Champions League football – not a languishing Tottenham that were beaten 3-1 by Leeds in May. Surely, Phillips stays put this summer.
