Germany and the Netherlands played out a thrilling encounter in the UEFA Nations League last night. Just like England did against Croatia, the Dutch scored two late goals to secure their place in the UEFA Nations League finals, doing so ahead of World Champions France and perennial powerforce Germany.

The Germans certainly will feel disappointed with losing the tie. They dominated the early proceedings and raced into a 2-0 lead. One of the key men during their brilliant start was Serge Gnabry.

Starting on the right-hand side of a three-man attack containing Leroy Sane and Timo Werner, he had Germany’s defenders scrambling from the get-go.

It was a fact not lost on Arsenal fans. The Gunners snapped up the German from Stuttgart in 2011 and he quickly became a talent on the lips of every Arsenal fan. Fast, strong, dynamic and technically gifted, fans were soon calling on him to replace Theo Walcott in the Arsenal first-team.

Unfortunately, his Arsenal career was stunted by two moments. One was a serious knee injury suffered against Bayern Munich in a Champions League clash. The next was a loan move to West Brom, where he simply did not fit into the style Tony Pulis wanted at The Hawthorns.

He left for Werder Bremen in 2016 in a reported £5 million deal.

The rest has been history.

Gnabry thrived in his one season at the Weserstadion, was snapped up by Bayern Munich and loaned out to Hoffenheim. There he continued to shine. Gnabry is now a starter for both Bayern and Germany, with four goals in five caps for his nation.

Needless to say, Arsenal fans were commenting on his display last night…
