‘More fighter than artist’: Marco Silva might regret letting Davy Klaassen go

It has not been a good year for Everton so far. Plenty of the clubs players have dropped off after Christmas and fans at Goodison Park are wondering if Marco Silva is the man to take Everton forward.

In the summer, the Portuguese made some tough choices about players at the club. One of them was Dutch international Davy Klaassen.

Everton signed the playmaker in June 2017 from Ajax. He joined in a deal reported by the BBC to be worth £23.6 million. Such a fee seemed a lot but given his consistently good form with the Dutch giants, it seemed to make sense.

However, Klaassen could not settle into life on Merseyside. Silva swiftly decided he was not needed and he joined Werder Bremen at a far reduced rate. The Guardian reported he left for just £12 million.

But his form now will have Everton wondering if they should have given him time.

Klaassen has been excellent for Bremen in recent weeks. He scored a fantastic equaliser against Stuttgart at the weekend, playing from his deeper midfield role that has recently become the norm.

Local paper Kreiszeitung lavished praise on the player but also highlighted his change in style by dubbing him ‘more fighter than artist’. Everton could certainly use some fighters in their team right now and Klaassen perhaps deserved a little longer to prove his worth.
