Mohamed Salah angling for new Liverpool contract amid PSG transfer speculation

According to the Liverpool Echo, Mohamed Salah is angling for a new contract at Anfield amid reports linking the Liverpool forward with a move to Paris Saint-Germain to replace Kylian Mbappe.

Salah is thought to see his future firmly on Merseyside after the Egypt international declared in January that he wanted to remain with Liver, but that his future was in the hands of Jurgen Klopp, the club and not his own.

“I do not know. If you ask, I say I want to stay here as long as I can, but, as I have said before, it is in the hands of the club,” Salah told Norwegian channel TV2. “I will always give 100% to the last minute I am in this club, and I want to win as many trophies as I can. And I want to give 100% to the people, who show me love all the time.”

Salah’s comments from earlier in the year and believed to still be the same now, and it is thought the 5 ft 8 wing wizard is angling to sign a new contract and extend his terms at Liverpool beyond his current £200,000-per-week (Spotrac) deal that expires in 2023.

How Lille Won The Ligue 1 Title Against All The Odds

The forward’s current contract makes him the Reds’ joint-top earner with 2020 arrival Thiago Alcantara, after Salah penned new terms a year on from his £34million (BBC) arrival from Roma in 2017.

Salah admitted at the start of May that he sees there being no prospect of an extension being offered anytime soon (Sky Sports), having received no approaches from any member of the Liverpool hierarchy to discuss the possibility of a new deal.

Paris Saint-Germain are said to have been in touch with his agent, however, with L’Equipe reporting that the Ligue 1 side would be ready to pursue a deal for Salah in the event that Mbappe leaves Le Parc des Princes after making contact with the Egyptian’s camp.

Liverpool reportedly value Salah at a minimum of €80m (£69m) and it has been claimed that PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the 28-year-old (ESPN), who finished as the runner up to Harry Kane for the Premier League Gold Boot with 22 goals in 37 games.

TBR’s view: Salah’s future is up to Liverpool

Liverpool would be in a strong position to fend off any approach from Paris Saint-Germain should Pochettino and Sporting Director Leonardo decide to target Salah, given the two years remaining on his current deal and the high valuation they have placed on him.

But PSG making an enticing offer to Salah could tempt the Egypt international to consider a future away from Anfield, with Liverpool showing little interest in awarding the 69-cap winger a new contract despite months of hinting at desires of extending his terms.

Liverpool also seem willing to sell Salah if they receive the right offer, given the complete lack of discussions over a new deal, which would surely make the 28-year-old’s situation stand out to PSG in the event that Mbappe attempts to force through a move out of France.
