Johnny Russell claimed in October that he is dreaming of a move to Celtic – during an interview with Sportsound – and now the Scotland winger has been spotted in Rome ahead of the Hoops’ clash against Lazio in the Europa League.

Russell, 29, is widely-regarded as a Celtic fan but came through the ranks at Dundee United before moving down south to English side Derby County. He scored 31 goals in 102 Scottish Premiership appearances for his boyhood club.

After more than 200 games for Derby, Russell has since moved across the pond to Sporting Kansas City – where he has had a hand in 40 goals during his 71 outings, scoring 21 times and creating 19. He has a contract in America until December 2020.

Still a regular for Scotland, Russell was asked if he wanted to play for Celtic before retiring – to which he replied: “I hope so, I grew up dreaming of that.” Now, a Celtic fan has posted a picture with Russell in Rome, a day before the clash against Lazio.

TBR’s view – So, should Celtic consider a move for Russell?

There is no doubt that the attacker has still got plenty of quality. In a rapidly improving MLS that boasted stars including the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Carlos Vela and Josef Martinez, Russell is shining for Sporting Kansas.

He is contracted at the club until the end of the next MLS season, but a move from Celtic in the January window would surely swap Russell’s thinking. Indeed, Neil Lennon may be tempted, with Scott Sinclair and Maryan Shved in the wilderness.

Neither are being used by Lennon, as James Forrest and Mo Elyounoussi continue to shine on the flanks. But bringing Russell to Parkhead would be a smart move, depending on his transfer fee and wages.
