The Independent claimed on Tuesday night that Wayne Rooney is hoping to make a summer move back to his boyhood club, Everton, on a free transfer. The United captain has made 145 assists and scored 250 goals in 550 games for the Red Devils to date and is seen as a hero by many, having spent 13 years at the club who he joined for £30 million in 2004 from the Toffees.
It is now expected that Jose Mourinho and the club will not demand a transfer fee to allow Rooney to leave, most likely to encourage his departure to reduce their wage bill. He is thought to be set to earn an impressive £150,000 per week at Everton, where he will figure under Ronald Koeman next season if the deal does go ahead as expected in the summer.
Staying in England could be vital for the 31-year-old if he is to regain his place in the England squad having missed out for the upcoming fixtures against Germany and Lithuania, with it unclear if he has been dropped by Gareth Southgate or if his leg injury has forced him out of action as he was not included in the new manager’s 26 man squad.
The move could have huge implications on other deals too, and could serve as encouragement in the club’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, whilst it may create further speculation regarding a potential exit of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku with both United and Chelsea thought to be keen, with the Belgian hoping to play Champions League football next season.
