Missing out on Matt Clarke could ultimately hand Leeds United Ben White this summer

Leeds United were one of many teams linked with Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke this summer. The talented defender always looked likely to leave Pompey after their failure to win promotion to the Championship.

The Portsmouth News reported that Leeds were one of a host of teams contemplating a summer bid for the player.

However, it looks as though his actual transfer this summer could still help Leeds, despite not being to Elland Road.

Clarke looks set to join Brighton and Hove Albion. As reported by The Argus, a deal for Clarke to head to the Amex Stadium is on the cusp of completion. A medical has taken place and a fee of £3 million was recently reported by the Daily Mail, although that seems low.

Regardless, it could surely leave Leeds with a free run at their main defensive target this summer.

That is, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Brighton youngster Ben White.

The YEP suggest Bielsa has been impressed by footage of the 21-year-old and that Leeds want a loan deal for the player.

White now has very little chance of playing regularly at Brighton next season. Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk have been an inseparable pair for the Seagulls whilst Nigerian international Leon Balogun is also in the fold.

White is therefore likely to be available for loan and Leeds look to be at the front of the queue. It looks like Clarke’s move to the Premier League could easily give Leeds their man this summer.
