Mirco Antenucci has joined many in applauding Kalvin Phillips on Instagram after the midfielder starred in Leeds United’s 1-0 away win over Derby County in the Championship play-off semi-finals.
The Whites took a step towards winning the play-offs and are now the favourites to book their place in the final at Wembley, thanks to Kemar Roofe’s winner against Frank Lampard’s side.
Leeds dominated possession and chances throughout the match, with Lampard’s side offering little going forward. Finally, the breakthrough was made just before the hour mark, as Roofe finished Jack Harrison’s exquisite past.
Phillips posted on Instagram after the match, as focus switches to Wednesday following Sunday’s excellent display from Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Antenucci replied, as did out-on-loan Hadi Sacko and Sampdoria star Ronaldo Vieira.
Arguably Leeds’ player of the season, Phillips has been absolutely integral to the way the Whites play under Bielsa.
Sitting as the anchor between defence and midfield, his presence and extra blanket of safety for the Leeds defence gives license to the likes of Mateusz Klich and Jamie Shackleton to go on and join the attack.
On Saturday, he was calm in possession, aggressive in the tackle and superior in the air. Leeds fans will be hoping for another complete performance on Wednesday night at Elland Road.
