James Milner knows what it takes to win the Premier League title, having done so twice with Manchester City, the side Liverpool are now battling for this season’s crown.
The midfielder, who Spotrac claim earns £140,000 a week at Anfield, says he sees enough in the current Reds squad to get over the line, having added ‘winners’ in recent transfer windows.
According to the Sunday People, 14/04, page 54, Milner said: “I think I see winners. That has been the thing we’ve been missing before in my time here.
“We’ve lost a few finals but those defeats will make it sweeter. To keep going and improving year on year is a good sign. We dig deep, we come again.”
This is a Liverpool squad short on experience of winning silverware but the way they have managed the title race this season indicates that isn’t something that will hold them back.
Milner is right to point out that constant improvement and this season it has manifested itself as a more controlled Reds side, as opposed to the one that has thrived on chaos for the previous two seasons.
You can’t win a title over a 38-game season by trying to go at 100 miles an hour and Liverpool have adapted their style to acknowledge that.
But it’s interesting that Milner notes that the ‘winners’ have been missing during his time at Anfield, adding another layer of influence to the likes of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk’s arrivals.
