Arsenal have recently been credited with an interest in Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar. The Sun has been reporting the news this week, suggesting Arsenal are ready to battle the Premier League’s current powerhouses Manchester City and Liverpool for his signature.
Manchester City remain many people’s favourites in any attempt to sign the Frenchman in the summer.
Which would make sense, considering how much Pep Guardiola rates Aouar. As he told the press in November 2018, the Manchester City boss is a huge fan of the midfielder. Indeed, The Sun reported that the City boss waited for Aouar in the tunnel after a 2-2 Champions League draw with the French side to congratulate him.
“Houssem Aouar is a very good player, he is incredible.
“We talk a lot about Ndombele but Aouar is also excellent. He’s always very calm with the ball at his feet, with an excellent technical quality.”
Guardiola was obviously impressed by what he saw, but Arteta would have seen the same things.
The Arsenal boss was sitting alongside Guardiola on that November night, as assistant manager of Manchester City. Earlier in the season, Arteta and Guardiola watched on as Aouar helped Lyon become one of only six teams who managed to defeat City in the 2018-19 season. Lyon remained undefeated against City with Aouar playing a key role in the Ligue One side’s midfield.
Now, Arteta may have to challenge his former coaching partner for the signature of the £65 million (Daily Mail) rated Frenchman.
