Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has expressed his concerns over Mohamed Elneny following the international break.

The Gunners midfielder has suffered two instances of international heartbreak in quick succession.

Elneny started every game for Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations and got his nation to the final.

However, Senegal beat the Pharaohs on penalties to get their hands on the trophy.

Less than two months later, Egypt and Senegal were once again involved in a high-stakes penalty shootout.

And once again, the Lions of Teranga triumphed to book their spot at the 2022 World Cup at Egypt’s expense.

With the international break now over, Elneny is back at Arsenal, who are chasing a top-four Premier League finish.

Up next for the Gunners is Monday night’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arteta admitted he was “really sad” for Elneny.

He was also confident his club teammates will help him get over the heartbreak.

Well, I think the majority of them had some really good experiences,” Arteta told the Arsenal media team.

“Some really good performances, they scored some important goals as well.

“I’m really sad for Mo Elneny because it’s the second time that has happened and emotionally that means a lot to him.

“So I’m sure the team will be here and ready to help him.”

“I know his qualities and what he brings to the squad”

Although Elneny looks certain to leave Arsenal once his contract expires, Arteta rates the player highly.

The Arsenal boss said back in November last year, as per Metro: “What Mo transmits through the team is special.

“He has this energy as a person, he goes in a room and he creates an atmosphere.

“Today I thought we needed that energy and that positive feeling he brings all the time and I think he was tremendous on the pitch.

“Obviously, I played with him and I know his qualities and what he brings to the squad.

“I like a lot players who have zero ego and they play for the team, they want to contribute whatever it is.

“Whether it’s one minute or 96 minutes, or just by being there and being all the time positive feedback and contribute to our culture.”
