Mikel Arteta says new Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu could end up playing in three different roles for the Gunners, after his deadline-day move.

Tomiyasu, 22, joined the club in a deal that could reach a huge £23million (Express) with add-ons, in the final moments of Tuesday’s deadline day.

The Japan international caught the attention of Premier League clubs – most notably Arsenal and Tottenham – after shining in Serie A with Bologna.

A player with 23 Japan caps already, and 64 appearances for Bologna – Arsenal have decided to make their move. Arteta has spoken about him.

He highlighted his new recruit’s versatility to play for the Gunners in three different roles. Right-back, centre-back, and right of a back three.

“We needed a full back who could be versatile, can play as a centre back, can play in a three, Tomi has this capacity,” Arteta told Football London.

“He is 22 years old but he has some really good experience in Serie A and at international level and with the qualities we are looking for.”

With Arsenal allowing Hector Bellerin to join Real Betis, a new right-back was needed. Tomiyasu provides the technique and pace of a full back.

But he also has the necessary, perhaps more physical traits, of a centre-back. He is good on the ball, and that allows him to play in a back three.

Also, Tomiyasu is solid in their and physically capable. He certainly has a bit of everything. So, at 22 and £23million, he is really value for money.

A good signing if he could offer an option in one of these positions. Being able to offer options in all three makes him a proper Arsenal bargain.
