Arsenal got the better of Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League encounter marred by refereeing controversy on Saturday.

Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off just before the break for a challenge on Matt Doherty as Wolves broke following a Gunners corner.

Doherty was caught by Lewis-Skelly’s outstretched right leg and went to ground about 10 yards outside of Wolves’ box.

Michael Oliver showed the Gunners academy graduate a straight red card, much to the bemusement of the Arsenal contingent.

However, the Gunners went on to win thanks to Riccardo Calafiori’s second-half goal in a game which saw both sides finish with ten men.

Mikel Arteta, speaking after the game, gave his thoughts on Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off and also revealed how the 18-year-old is feeling right now.

Mikel Arteta says Myles Lewis-Skelly is ‘very happy’ after Arsenal win but ‘very worried’ about aftermath

Arteta, speaking on Sky Sports News, said Lewis-Skelly is “really happy now” because Arsenal won, but is “very worried” about what could happen next.

He also said Arsenal will decide whether they will appeal the red card, although he wondered whether it’s so obvious that there may not be a need.

“That’s for the club to decide what is the best decision,” said Arteta. “It’s that obvious that maybe we don’t even need to [put in an appeal].

“He’s really happy now that the team won and found a way to win it.

“He is very worried about what’s coming next because he’s strongly feeling that there was nothing to do with the action.”

Arteta also said: “It is that clear and I will leave it to you guys. I am absolutely fuming.

“But I will leave it with you, it is that obvious that I don’t think my words are going to help.”

Calafiori shares verdict on Lewis-Skelly red card

Calafiori, who scored the winner for Arsenal, said he didn’t feel Lewis-Skelly deserved a red card.

The Italy international also revealed how disappointed the youngster was at the break.

“From the bench, it was clearly not a red card,” Calafiori said on Sky Sports News.

“I saw him at half-time he was so disappointed for the team. But at the end, we won. So nothing happened.

“He was upset, but now he’s happy because we won for sure. He’s a good footballer, a good guy, so we help him a lot.

“The strategy was not to put us in a defensive mood, it was to score and win the game. And we did.

“It’s so important for us, it’s the first time we won this season after a red card.”

Pundit Chris Sutton disagreed with the red card decision, calling it a “shocker” that came about out of “total incompetence”.

Even Tottenham Hotspur fan and former Spurs player Jamie O’Hara was on Arsenal’s side on this occasion.
