Mikel Arteta has been speaking about Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham last night and lamented his side’s inability to put the ball in the net.
The Gunners created plenty of openings but never really troubled the scoresheet as Alphonse Areola had little to do in the way of big saves.
For Arteta, it was a frustrating element to what was otherwise a decent enough performance. Arsenal did fail to defend the Hammers on two key occasions which cost them the game, but in the main, they did what their manager wants.
However, Arteta admitted he was stunned that his side didn’t take a single one of their chances.

Mikel Arteta shocked by his Arsenal team against West Ham
Speaking about his side’s performance and lack of finishing when it mattered, Arteta said he found it incredible his team didn’t score.
“There were big situations that is incredible that we don’t put it in the net or that they did really well blocking certain shots. Sometimes we didn’t pick the right pass or the centimetres of the smallest spaces in the box, there was a combination of all, but again I have to praise the players because they tried and they kept trying right up until the end,” Arteta said.
“If they will continue to play like that, it is very unlikely that it will happen again I just told them ‘Listen, we’re disappointed we lost at home. We have to go now to Fulham and play better if possible than today and win the game and that’s it.”
Arsenal have to grind things out
We mentioned this in the aftermath of the game last night but there has to be a way for Arsenal to win games when things aren’t always going to plan.
So far this season, they have actually been ok at the back and that’s helped them stay in games and then go on to sneak results.
However, we saw with them conceding three at Luton and just getting over the line that there is still an immaturity to this Arsenal team at times.
It was evident last night as well. West Ham simply got their lead and then held firm before taking a second chance from a set-piece with ease.
Arteta, then, has plenty to dwell on over the next few weeks.
