Mikel Arteta says Arsenal star Fabio Vieira still has to improve his defending

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta praised Fabio Vieira‘s performance against Bodo/Glimt last night but reminded the midfielder that he still has to improve his defending.

The 22-year-old started only his third game for the Gunners last night and he impressed. He provided a beautiful assist to Rob Holding in the first half before scoring himself late in the game. It was a fine performance, and Arteta is pleased with his display.

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal star Fabio Vieira still has to improve his defending

Vieira’s performances have raised the excitement level among Arsenal supporters.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Gunners for £34 million (Sky Sports) in the summer transfer window, and fans have had to wait for a while to see him in action.

Now that he’s fit, he’s slowly showing his quality, but Arteta wants him to improve his work off the ball to become even better.

Speaking in his press conference after the game, Arteta said, as quoted by Arsenal.com: “Yes (fans should be excited), you saw the quality.

“Every time he’s around the box he’s a real threat, really intelligent player and brave.

“In defending he still needs to do more and understand it more because organisation is key when you play against good teams in ball possession.”

Vieira’s quality on the ball is undeniable.

The 22-year-old has shown already that he can score goals, create chances and be a real threat every time he’s in and around the box. He has the potential to be a fine player for the Gunners, but there is a lot of room for improvement when he doesn’t have the ball at his feet.

One of the biggest reasons why Arsenal have been so good this season is their positioning. Almost every player knows where they have to be with and without possession, and even the attacking players help out defensively.

That has made them a really hard side to beat, and Arteta will make sure that Vieira improves that side of his game so that he can fit in with the other regulars at the club.
