Mikel Arteta says Arsenal have a superb 21-year-old who 'needs to believe' just how good he is

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has revealed that he sometimes has to remind Emile Smith Rowe of how good he is, and that he needs to have more faith in himself.

The Arsenal playmaker has been one of the biggest success stories out of Hale End in recent years.

Along with Bukayo Saka, Smith Rowe has broken into the Arsenal first team and become a key player with a huge future ahead of him.

The 21-year-old made his breakthrough a year ago, when he started against Chelsea on Boxing Day and helped Arsenal to a 3-1 win.

Ten months on, and Smith Rowe has 53 competitive senior appearances to his name, plus two England Under-21 caps.

There’s no doubting that Smith Rowe is an incredibly talented and hard-working player, and arguably one of the most exciting in the Arsenal team.

That said, Arteta’s comments suggest that he perhaps needs to be a bit more confident.

“Emile is naturally like this (humble),” Arteta told football.london.

“If anything, sometimes you have to tell him how good he is.

“He needs to believe how good he is. You have to encourage him to try [things] he’s capable of doing.

“He’s a joy to work with. It’s still very early in his career but we’re really happy to have him in the team.”
