Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed to the Gunners media team that the club has been “in communication” with Real Madrid over Dani Ceballos.
Last summer, the Gunners brought the 23-year-old to the Emirates Stadium on a season-long stint from the Bernabeu for a reported £15million fee (The Sun).
Ceballos was reportedly open to cutting short his stay in January as a result of a lack of game time under Unai Emery, but worked his way into Arteta’s plans before the shutdown.
The Spaniard has also been performing well after the restart and ran the show against Norwich, helping Arsenal to a 4-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.
Ceballos had his best game since Burnley, showing great defensive awareness but also improved vision and speed in moving the ball forward, providing chances on a platter for his teammates.
Speaking after the game, Arteta told the Arsenal media team: “Both clubs have been in communication. I really like Dani and what he brings to the team.
“When I joined he wasn’t available because he had a difficult injury, but he’s understanding what we’re trying to do really, really nicely and he has big personality to play and take the ball in any area of the field and give us the continuity that we need as a team to control the games better, but as well without the ball.
“The running that he’s putting in, the tackles, every time with the interceptions, his desire to win that ball back and help the team, he’s improved so much and he looks a really good player at the moment.”
The transfer saga involving Arsenal and Ceballos has been going on for quite some time but to hear Arteta confirm communication between the Gunners and Real, amid much-improved performances from the 23-year-old, seem to bode well for the future.
It just goes to show how quickly things can change in football – two games into the restarted season, Arsenal appeared in dire straits after two defeats, but now they’ve got three wins on the bounce, secured Bukayo Saka to a long-term contract, and things seem to be moving in the right direction on Ceballos.
